Used Toyota RAV4 in Cameroon: Which Generation to Buy, and at What Price?
MotoNaMarket Editorial Team · 2026-10-12

Four very different cars are sold under the RAV4 name, from 3 to over 20 million FCFA. Generations, real prices from 64 listings, the known fault and pre-purchase checks.
The Toyota RAV4 is the most listed SUV on MotoNaMarket: 64 active listings on 11 October 2026, 36 of them in Douala and 25 in Yaoundé. Its reputation is deserved — ground clearance, simple mechanics, parts everywhere — but it hides a trap: four very different cars are sold under the same name, from 3 to over 20 million FCFA. Picking the right generation matters more than haggling 300,000 FCFA off the price.
This guide covers every generation found in Cameroon, the prices actually asked on the site, the known fault of the most common engine and the checks to make before paying. To see what is available now, browse the Toyota RAV4s for sale.
The four RAV4 generations found in Cameroon
Toyota identifies each generation with a chassis code. Sellers rarely quote it, but the year on the registration document is enough to work it out.
| Generation | Years (approx.) | Most common engines | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|
| XA20 | 2001–2005 | 2.0 petrol, then 2.4 from 2004 | Cheapest, but now over 20 years old |
| XA30 | 2006–2012 | 2.4 petrol (2AZ-FE), rarer 3.5 V6 | The most common in Cameroon |
| XA40 | 2013–2018 | 2.0 or 2.5 petrol, hybrid in some markets | More modern, 6-speed automatic |
| XA50 | 2019–2024 | 2.5 petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid | The most expensive, all-new platform |
Years vary slightly with the country of first registration; the detailed RAV4 history gives the timeline market by market.
How much does a used RAV4 cost in Cameroon?
The figures below are asking prices on MotoNaMarket's active listings on 11 October 2026. The median is the middle price: half the listings are below it, half above. The range shows where the central half of the market sits.
| Generation | Listings | Median price | Central half of the market |
|---|---|---|---|
| XA20 (2001–2005) | 8 | 3,600,000 FCFA | too scattered to be useful |
| XA30 (2006–2012) | 28 | 6,500,000 FCFA | 5.1 to 8.4 million |
| XA40 (2013–2018) | 12 | 10,750,000 FCFA | 8.1 to 14.7 million |
| XA50 (2019 onwards) | 14 | 19,250,000 FCFA | 18.1 to 21.3 million |
Two more figures describe this market: 67% of the RAV4s for sale are automatic (43 of 64), and the median advertised mileage is 90,000 km. Moving from an XA30 to an XA40 costs about 4 million FCFA at the median; moving to an XA50 nearly doubles the budget again.
To place a specific listing, the Toyota RAV4 price guide gives the value year by year, and every listing on the site shows a price-rating bar computed from comparable RAV4s. To value your own car, use the price estimator.
The XA30: the heart of the market, and its known fault
With 28 listings, the third generation is the most common choice: a 5 to 8 million FCFA budget, proven mechanics and parts available everywhere. Its weak point is documented by Toyota itself: some 2.4 petrol engines (2AZ-FE) can burn too much oil. In the United States, Toyota extended the warranty on these engines through a warranty enhancement programme (ZE7) that covers, among others, 2006 to 2008 RAV4s.
Before buying a 2.4 XA30:
- ask how often the owner tops up the oil — an evasive answer is already an answer;
- check the dipstick, then watch the exhaust on a cold start: bluish smoke means burnt oil (see what exhaust smoke colour tells you);
- if your mechanic can remove a spark plug, oily deposits confirm the diagnosis.
An engine that uses a moderate amount of oil is not finished, but the price should reflect it. Our article on normal oil consumption explains when to worry.
XA40 and XA50: more modern, different checks
The XA40 drops the V6 and moves to a 6-speed automatic. In these gearboxes, so-called "lifetime" fluid ages badly in heat and traffic: ask whether it has been changed and read our guide to automatic gearbox fluid changes.
The XA50 is often imported as a hybrid. The traction battery is then the most expensive part of the car: have it diagnosed before paying, following our guide to checking a hybrid battery. The plug-in hybrid remains marginal in Cameroon (one listing out of 64) and only makes sense with reliable charging at home.
The checks to make before buying a RAV4
- 4WD or 2WD? Many imported RAV4s are two-wheel drive. If you are counting on all-wheel drive for rough roads, confirm it on the test drive and on the specification sheet.
- Front end and suspension. Ball joints, bushings and shock absorbers suffer on our roads; a clunk over speed bumps means a bill is coming (see shock absorbers and broken roads).
- Mileage. A low reading on a fifteen-year-old car should be backed by invoices: here is how to spot a tampered odometer.
- Chassis number. Compare the VIN stamped on the car with the one on the papers, and check for outstanding manufacturer recalls.
- Papers. A car that has not cleared customs can be seized: read about the risks of an uncleared vehicle before paying anything.
- Independent inspection. Have the car checked by a professional who does not work for the seller: book a pre-purchase inspection or find a verified mechanic near you.
Buy locally or import a RAV4?
Cameroon does not ban the import of older vehicles, but the 2026 finance law raises excise duty with age. For a car of 2,500 cc or less — which covers the 2.0, 2.4 and 2.5 RAV4s — the rate is 0% up to 12 years, 12.5% from over 12 up to 20 years, then 25%. A 2012 XA30 is 14 years old in 2026, so it pays 12.5%. An XA20 pays 25%. The 3.5 V6, above 2,500 cc, pays 12.5% up to 15 years, then 25%.
Work out the full cost with the import duty calculator and read our customs clearance cost guide. Then compare with RAV4s already cleared and registered for sale locally: their price already includes those taxes.
Which RAV4 for your budget?
- Under 6 million: a well-maintained 2.4 XA30, after an oil-consumption check. Avoid the XA20 unless it is very cheap and fully inspected.
- 8 to 15 million: an XA40, with a record of gearbox fluid changes.
- Over 18 million: an XA50, a hybrid if the battery is healthy.

Frequently asked questions
Which generation of used Toyota RAV4 should I buy in Cameroon?
With 5 to 8 million FCFA, the XA30 (2006–2012) is the most common and the easiest to maintain, provided you check the 2.4 engine's oil consumption. Above 8 million, the XA40 (2013–2018) is more modern; the XA50 (2019 onwards) usually costs over 18 million.
How much does a used Toyota RAV4 cost in Cameroon?
On MotoNaMarket listings on 11 October 2026, the median asking price was 6.5 million FCFA for an XA30, 10.75 million for an XA40 and 19.25 million for an XA50. The RAV4 price guide gives the value year by year.
Does the 2.4 RAV4 burn oil?
Some 2.4 engines (2AZ-FE) in the XA30 generation can burn too much oil; Toyota acknowledged it with a warranty extension covering, among others, 2006 to 2008 RAV4s in the United States. Not every engine is affected: check the dipstick, the smoke on start-up and the top-up history.
Do I pay excise duty to import an older RAV4 into Cameroon?
Yes, depending on age. For a RAV4 of 2,500 cc or less, the 2026 finance law sets excise at 0% up to 12 years, 12.5% from over 12 up to 20 years, then 25%. The import duty calculator gives the full cost.
