Radiator, Hoses and Coolant: The Maintenance That Prevents Engine Failure

The cooling system is what separates an ordinary traffic jam from a blown head gasket. Here are the six parts to check, and the commonest mistake made here.
Engine coolant in a hot climate has a harder job than most owners realise. At 32 °C, with the air conditioning running and stationary in traffic, a car's cooling system works at the very limit of what it was designed for. Any weakness shows immediately — and the bill is not the radiator, it is the engine.
Here are the six parts that matter, and what to check on each.
1. Coolant — and the mistake that costs an engine
This is the commonest error: topping up with tap water. Coolant is not there only to cool. It carries corrosion inhibitors that protect the aluminium of the head and radiator, and it raises the boiling point above water's.
Water alone does three things: it boils sooner, it scales the system, and it corrodes the engine internally. Water as an emergency get-you-home is acceptable; leaving it in for months is not.
Check the level cold only, between the marks. A level that drops with no visible leak is a serious signal: the coolant is going somewhere, often into the engine.
2. The radiator
It is in the front line: dust, mud, insects and sand block its fins. A clogged radiator stops shedding heat even in perfect condition. Rinse it at low pressure when washing — too strong a jet bends the fins and makes things worse. The same fouling affects the air conditioning condenser just in front, which explains AC that cools badly at a standstill.
3. The hoses
Engine cold, squeeze each hose. It should be supple and firm. A hose that is hard and cracked, or conversely soft and spongy, is finished. Look at the clips too, and at dried white or coloured traces that indicate a slow leak. A hose costs little; one that bursts on an upcountry road costs an engine.
4. The thermostat
Stuck closed, it causes rapid overheating. Stuck open, it prevents the engine reaching temperature — causing higher consumption and accelerated wear, with no dashboard warning. An engine that takes far too long to warm up is as abnormal as one that runs too hot.
5. The fan
Moving, airflow from the road is enough. Stationary, only the fan sheds heat. If it no longer runs — motor, relay, fuse or sensor — the temperature climbs as soon as you stop. Simple test: engine hot, AC on, the fan should be turning.
6. The expansion tank cap
The most underestimated part in the system. The cap holds the circuit under pressure, which raises the boiling point. A tired cap lets the coolant boil at normal temperature. It costs a few thousand francs and takes a minute to change.
