Car Import Age Limits in Africa: The Rules Country by Country (2026)
MotoNaMarket Editorial Team · 2026-10-12

Cameroon bans no car for its age; Ivory Coast refuses anything over 5 years old. The 2026 rules of 11 African countries, with sources.
In Africa, a used car's year does not just decide its price: it decides whether it can enter the country at all. And the rules differ sharply from one country to the next. Cameroon bans no car for its age but taxes older ones more; Ivory Coast refuses private cars over five years old; Ghana has banned those over fifteen since 1 October 2026.
These differences matter to the diaspora shipping a car home, to importers and to Cameroonian sellers whose customers come from neighbouring countries. Here are the rules of eleven countries, checked on 11 October 2026, each with its source.
The rules in 2026 at a glance
Unless stated otherwise, age is counted from first registration (or first use) abroad.
| Country | Private cars | Other vehicles / details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cameroon | No age ban | Excise duty rises with age (see below) | 2026 finance law |
| Ivory Coast | 5 years maximum | Taxis 5 years; minibuses (9 to 34 seats) and vans up to 5 t: 7 years; coaches over 34 seats and trucks over 5 t: 10 years. In force since 1 July 2018 | 2017 decree |
| Senegal | 10 years | 15 years for trucks and passenger transport vehicles (decree signed 24 October 2025; the limit was 8 years) | Le Soleil |
| Gabon | 10 years | Same limit for every category since 2024 (it was 8 years) | Gabonreview |
| DR Congo | 15 years | 15 years for commercial vehicles and heavy trucks too; 20 years for agricultural, forestry and mining tractors. Decree of 24 January 2026 (the general limit was 20 years) | Agence Ecofin |
| Nigeria | 12 years (from year of manufacture) | Left-hand drive required | Legit.ng |
| Ghana | 15 years maximum since 1 October 2026 | Flood-damaged, burnt or bent-chassis vehicles are also banned | Citi Newsroom |
| Kenya | 8 years | In 2026: right-hand drive and first registered on or after 1 January 2019 | The Kenya Times |
| Uganda | 15 years maximum (since 2018) | An environmental levy applies to vehicles aged 8 and over | Africanews |
| Ethiopia | Import of petrol or diesel private cars banned (2024) | Only electric cars are allowed | VOA |
| Algeria | Under 3 years | Resident individuals only, once every three years | TSA |
These rules change often — Senegal, Gabon, DR Congo and Ghana have all changed theirs since 2024. Before shipping a car, have the current rule confirmed by a licensed clearing agent or by the destination country's customs.
Three different approaches
Behind the variety of numbers there are three approaches:
- The strict cap (Ivory Coast, Kenya, Algeria): only recent cars get in. The fleet gets younger, but cars cost more to buy.
- The wide cap (Senegal, Gabon, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, DR Congo): the oldest vehicles are kept out, at 10 to 15 years depending on the country. Several of these countries have recently raised their limit, under pressure from buyers and the diaspora.
- No cap, but tax (Cameroon): any car can enter, but the older it is, the more it pays. Ethiopia is the outlier, banning combustion engines outright.
Kenya and Uganda drive on the left and import mostly from Japan; Central and West Africa drive on the right. A right-hand-drive car is impractical there and hard to resell, even where nothing expressly bans it.
Cameroon in detail
No car is refused entry to Cameroon because of its age. However, the 2026 finance law raises excise duty with age:
- cars of 2,500 cc or less: 0% up to 12 years, 12.5% from over 12 up to 20 years, 25% beyond;
- cars over 2,500 cc: 12.5% up to 15 years, 25% beyond;
- commercial vehicles, buses and minibuses: 0% up to 15 years, 12.5% up to 20 years, 25% beyond;
- electric cars: exempt from excise.
This duty comes on top of customs duty and VAT, calculated in cascade: our customs clearance cost guide details every line, and the import duty calculator works it out for your car in seconds.
What these rules mean for you
You live abroad and want to send a car home. In Cameroon, age does not block entry, but it can blow up the bill: a 13-year-old car already pays 12.5% excise. Our guide to buying a car in Cameroon from the diaspora compares importing with buying locally.
You sell to customers from neighbouring countries. A car bought in Douala cannot always leave again: in Gabon it must be 10 years old at most. Check the destination country's rule before closing the deal.
You import through the port. Read our article on the port of Kribi and car imports, and be wary of a cheap car that has not cleared customs.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an age limit for importing a car into Cameroon?
No. Cameroon refuses no car because of its age. However, the 2026 finance law raises excise duty with age: for a car of 2,500 cc or less, 0% up to 12 years, 12.5% up to 20 years and 25% beyond.
Which African country has the strictest age limit?
Among the countries in our table, Algeria (under 3 years) and Ivory Coast (5 years for private cars) are the strictest. Ethiopia goes further still by banning imports of petrol or diesel private cars.
What is Senegal's import age limit in 2026?
Since the decree signed on 24 October 2025, the limit is 10 years for private cars and 15 years for trucks and passenger transport vehicles. It was previously 8 years.
How is an imported car's age calculated?
Usually from the date of first registration or first use abroad. Nigeria counts from the year of manufacture. Check the exact rule with a licensed clearing agent before buying.
