Renting Out Your Own Car in Cameroon: What It Really Earns

Most private cars in Cameroon are driven under two hours a day. The rest of the time they lose value, consume insurance and occupy a space. Renting yours out turns a dormant asset into income — but rarely at the level the daily rate suggests.

Here is the honest calculation, before you decide.

The daily-rate trap

A rate of 30,000 FCFA a day does not make 900,000 FCFA a month. Three gaps separate the advertised rate from real income:

• Occupancy. A rented car is not rented every day. Ten to twenty days a month is a realistic target depending on city, season and model.
• Accelerated wear. A rental vehicle covers in a month what a private owner covers in three. Oil changes, tyres, pads and shocks follow the same rhythm.
• Quiet periods. Demand is not linear: holidays, back-to-school, dry season and rainy season are not alike.

The calculation to run first

What renting actually pays, and against how many rivals

Two numbers to hold before you model your return. The median daily rate for vehicles offered for rent on MotoNaMarket is 37 500 FCFA — but supply is thin: only 12 vehicles are listed for rent, against 347 for sale. That is an opportunity as much as a warning: little competition, but a young market where demand is still being built city by city. Compare what the cars for rent actually charge before setting your own rate.

Take your daily rate, multiply by a conservative occupancy, then subtract:

1. Accelerated maintenance — count oil changes at the real rate, not the handbook's. Our guide to engine oil and change intervals gives the figures that apply here.
2. Wear parts — tyres, pads, shocks. On our roads suspension is the biggest line; compare prices on the auto parts marketplace.
3. Appropriate insurance. A private policy does not necessarily cover rental use. Settle this before the first rental, not after the first claim.
4. Accelerated depreciation from the mileage. Place it with the price estimator: compare your vehicle's value now with its likely value after another 30,000 km.
5. Downtime for repairs, during which the vehicle earns nothing.

What remains is your net income. That is the figure to compare against whatever else you would do with the same capital.

With or without a driver: two different businesses

Without a driver

You hand the vehicle over. Simpler income, but you control neither the driving, the loading nor the actual use. Always require the licence, an identity document, a written contract and a photographed condition report at departure and return.

With a driver

Higher rate, better-treated vehicle, controlled use — but you are employing someone, with everything that entails. It is also the format most in demand from business customers and for trips upcountry.

Either way the local demand is real: browse the rentals available to see prevailing rates and the equipment customers expect.

Which vehicles rent best

• Models that are reliable and repairable anywhere — Corolla, RAV4, Prado, Hilux. Three weeks off the road waiting for a part destroys the economics; our guide to fuel-efficient and durable cars explains this criterion.
• Good ground clearance, if your customers travel upcountry: see the SUVs and pickups.
• Faultless air conditioning. It is the number one complaint; read diagnosing AC without replacing the compressor before listing.

Protecting yourself: five rules

1. A written contract for every rental, stating identities, dates, start and end mileage, deposit and fuel policy.
2. A photographed, dated condition report at departure and return. It is what settles disputes.
3. Insurance that covers rental use, confirmed in writing by your insurer.
4. Complete papers in the vehicle — registration, insurance, roadworthiness certificate.
5. Preventive, not reactive maintenance. On a rented car a breakdown costs twice: the repair, and the days not rented.

Listing your vehicle

Once the sums are done and the insurance settled, list from rent out your car, or through the publish screen covering sale, rental, swap and auction. Honest photos and a precise description of the terms (mileage included, deposit, permitted area) sharply reduce disputes.
