Cracked Windscreen in Cameroon: Repair the Chip or Replace the Glass?

Cracked windscreen repair cost is decided in the first week. A stone thrown up by a lorry on the Douala–Yaoundé road, and there is a small chip in the corner of the windscreen. Nothing alarming: the car drives, the view is clear. Three weeks later the crack runs across the driver's field of vision and repair is no longer possible.

That timeline is not inevitable. It has causes, and they can be managed.

Why a crack spreads so fast here

The windscreen you probably have

The median car for sale here is a 2014. On a vehicle that age the windscreen is almost always the original glass, fitted more than ten years ago, with a seal that has baked in the sun and a scatter of accumulated micro-chips. That is why a chip spreads faster here than in a temperate climate: the glass is already working.

A windscreen is laminated: two layers of glass bonded by a plastic film. An impact breaks the outer layer. What turns that point into a thirty-centimetre crack are stresses our environment multiplies:

• Thermal shock. A car parked in full sun gets very hot; blasting the air conditioning onto a scorching windscreen creates exactly the differential that propagates a crack. It is cause number one.
• Body flex. On broken roads the body works, and the bonded windscreen works with it. Every pothole pushes the crack along.
• Vibration and slammed doors do the rest.

Repairable or not: four criteria

1. Size. A chip smaller than a coin can usually be repaired. Beyond that, resin no longer restores the strength.
2. Position. A chip in the driver's direct field of vision often forces replacement even when small: repair leaves optical distortion, and vehicle compliance is judged there too.
3. Depth. If the crack has reached the inner layer, it is over.
4. Age. A chip left open for weeks has filled with dust and moisture; resin no longer bonds properly.

The practical rule: the sooner you act, the more likely and cheaper repair remains. A chip treated within the week is almost always repairable.

What buys you time

• Put a piece of clear tape over the chip to keep dust and water out until it can be treated.
• Avoid thermal shock: do not aim the air conditioning full onto a scorching windscreen, and never pour cold water on it.
• Slow down on broken roads — the same instinct that protects your suspension protects your glass.
• Close doors normally: cabin pressure stresses the bond.

If replacement is unavoidable

Three things to check before accepting a quote:

• Glass quality and the presence of approval markings. A non-compliant windscreen can cause problems at roadworthiness testing and during document checks.
• Bond curing time before driving again. A car handed back too early has a windscreen that will not hold in an impact — and it contributes to body rigidity and to the passenger airbag deploying correctly.
• Sensors. On recent vehicles a driver-assistance camera, rain sensor and aerial may be built into the windscreen and need recalibration.
