Being overcharged at a garage rarely rests on an outright lie. It rests on asymmetry: the mechanic knows, you do not. A readable quote restores the balance — and often simply knowing what to ask changes the tone.

What a quote must contain

A usable quote includes at minimum:

• Itemised parts, line by line, with unit price and quantity

• The route of each part: genuine, recognised aftermarket, or used import

• Labour, expressed as hours billed and an hourly rate — not buried in a lump sum

• The exact nature of the work, not a vague "engine repair"

• A validity period and, ideally, a warranty on the work

You come in for an oil change and leave with six repairs that "absolutely must be done". Some may be real — but rarely all of them, and rarely all urgent. 2. Replacing instead of diagnosing

3. Billed new, fitted used

This is where getting the old parts back matters most. Always ask for the replaced parts, and say so before the work, not after. That single sentence changes how a repair proceeds.

• "What is urgent, and what can wait three months?"

• "Is this part genuine, aftermarket or used?"

• "How many hours of labour, at what rate?"

• "Is there a warranty on this repair, and for how long?"

• "Can you give me the replaced parts?"

None of these is aggressive. They simply signal that you are following the job — which is usually enough.

When to get a second quote

The rule is simple: as soon as the amount approaches a significant share of your car's value, or as soon as a major assembly is involved — engine, gearbox, clutch, running gear. For an oil change it is pointless. For an automatic gearbox it is essential.
