Tires in Cameroon — buying guide
Between potholes, dirt roads and the rainy season, tires work hard in Cameroon. Tires are what stop the car, not the brakes: a bald tire on a wet road multiplies stopping distance.
Wear signs to watch for
- Wear indicators reached (tread below 1.6 mm)
- Sidewall cracking — common in the heat
- Uneven wear (a sign of alignment or tired shocks)
- Steering vibration at steady speed
Before buying: the checklist
- Match the dimensions on the registration card or current tire sidewall
- Check the DOT date: a tire older than 5–6 years should be avoided even if 'new'
- Beware of retreaded used tires sold as new
- Replace tires in pairs (same axle) at minimum
What drives the price
- Size (SUV and 4x4 tires cost significantly more)
- New or imported used
- Brand and country of manufacture
FAQ
New or used tires: which to choose in Cameroon?
Imported used tires are common and economical, but check the DOT date, that sidewalls have no repairs, and that wear is even. For the front axle, new remains safest.
When should tires be replaced?
As soon as tread reaches the wear indicators (1.6 mm), when cracking is visible, or after 5–6 years even with low mileage — rubber hardens in the heat.
